Iconize Textlinks with CSS

Links are fun, but sometimes we don't know where they take us. With this little CSS technique a user can identify a link by its icon. This whole thing was inspired by the "Showing Hyperlink Cues with CSS" article of Ask the CSS Guy.

The idea is pretty simple, if a link points to a .pdf file, we show the .pdf icon after the link.

Many people use Javascript to automatically add file type icons to their external links, mailto links, Word, PDF, Excel Document links… when it can be done very easily with CSS 2.1.

Hyperlink Cues with Favicons

For links that point to external sites, what if, instead of showing a generic 'external link' icon, we showed that site's favicon?

The favicon gives the reader something to recognize if they are already familiar with the destination site, and if not familiar, something new to associate with it. It's similar to the way a feed reader, or a bookmark list, might show sites.
